The new product venture is launched on one of two bases. The first is new invention or innovative technology. Corel Draw, for example, developed by Dr. Michael Cowpland, was the graphics response to the Macintosh software. Initially produced as an engineering tool, the product was successfully modified to compete with Pagemaker. In the first few months of operations, Cowpland ‘ s familiarity with the industry carried the product into the market. Fortunately, as a co-founder and former executive of Mitel Corporation, his managerial experience bridged the gap to full commercialization.
