When it comes to independence fighters during Japan's colonial period, Korean people cannot forget about the March 1st Independence Movement Day and Gwan Sun Ryu. Korean people sing a song celebrating her 1 March every year. Ryu called people in a market place and handed out Korean flags. She urged them to take to the streets and participate in Korea's struggle for independence. Finally, Ryu was arrested by Japan's police. Shouting 'dae han dok rip man se 대한 독립 만세 (Long live an independent Korea)!’, she was beaten and tortured to death in a prison at the age of 18. She is called 'Korea's Joan of Arc'
