Environmental munificence is the availability of resources or resource substitutions. Continuous or stable environmental growth allows an organization to generate slack resources to provide a buffer in case of relative scarcity. As the number of uninsured increases, we expect that hospitals would increase uncompensated care provision. However, an increased need to provide indigent care may push hospitals, especially those that are nonprofit, to reallocate and to adjust their capacities to become more efficient so that they can serve more uninsured patients, especially for nonprofit hospitals
