The EU has become a pioneer in climate
protection. By 2020, it intends to reduce
energy consumption by 20 percent compared
to 1990 levels, which will cut carbon
emissions by 780 million metric tons.
Helping it work towards that target are resolutions such as Ecodesign Directive
2009/125/EC, which sets out requirements
for energy related products. It provides a
basis, for example, for eliminating inefficient
light sources from the European market.
