it is to be distinguished from x-ray diffraction for crystal structure analysis. x-ray spectroscopy determines presence and quantities of chemical elements by detecting characteristic x-ray that are emitted from atoms irradiated by a high-energy beam. from the characteristic x-rays emitted from sample atoms, chemical elements can be identified either from the x-ray wavelength, as in x-ray wavelenght dispersive spectroscopy(WDS), or from the x-ray energy, as in x-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy(EDS). the
