A commonly cited peculiarity about geologic maps is that the audience for them is both the lay public and geological scientists. This means that though the maps must be highly detailed they must also be understandable, at least to a certain extent, by a non‑scientific audience. One of the things that is being done to improve the dissemination of geologic information to non‑geologists is to standardize the maps even more than they already are so that a map viewer does not need to relearn symbols, colors, and labels each time a new geology map is issued.
