Urban road verges can be refuges for native plant species such as
grassland species (Langer, 1994; Cilliers and Bredenkamp, 2000),
with habitat age and intensity of maintenance driving species
composition (Jantunen et al., 2006). Small grassland patches in
roundabouts or other road enclosures can support abundant insect
populations (Helden and Leather, 2004; Koivula et al., 2005).
