Data relating to physical and chemical characterisation of the
single fractions are reported in Table 4. The data reported represent
the average values and standard deviations calculated from
analyses carried out on the samples of single fractions collected
over the five months period.
The MFC and BP fractions were both characterised by the highest
total solid contents while the fractions F and V were on the contrary
characterised by the lowest contents of TS. The fraction MFC
was characterised by a high concentration of TOC, COD, TKN and
Ptot indicating a large content of lipids and proteins while fractions
BP, F and V showed similar TOC contents of up to approximately
50% related to a higher content of carbohydrates (cellulose, hemicellulose,
starch and sugars). All samples were characterised by
high VS content close to or above 90% with the exception of the
fraction U, with an average VS content of 81%. This lower value is
