1. Introduction
Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis) are blue-green microalgae (cyanobacteria).
They are used as human protein supplements because
of the high content in proteins, γ-linoleic acid and vitamins
(Tokusoglu and Unal, 2003). In the future Spirulina could also be
an interesting alternative and sustainable protein source when shortage
of protein sources for human consumption will arise due to the
growth of the world population. The Food and Agriculture Organization
of the United Nations reported that, because Spirulina can
be harvested and processed easily and has significantly high macroand
micronutrient contents, it has considerable potential as a crop
for nutritional enhancement, livelihood development and environmental
mitigations (Habib et al., 2008). We present a case in which
an anaphylactic reaction due to a Spirulina tablet occurred.
