For these aquaculture systems to more completely address environmental issues,it is now
critical that efforts focus upon the reduction of nitrogen species in
effluent waters. Importantly, the ability to confidently and consistently
remove nitrate nitrogen from RAS effluent may allow
expansion of this industry into locales currently bound by stringent
water quality standards and may potentially allow increased
reuse of treated effluents. There is a crucial need to develop practical
and cost effective methods to reduce RAS nitrate–nitrogen loads
to allow their maintained or increased productivity simultaneously
with attainment of water quality goals and good environmental
stewardship.
