4.2. Optimal operating pressures
In isothermal columns, the density of the solvent is constant
throughout the column and its optimal values are determined by
the selection of column temperature and pressure, aiming at a good
balance between vapour phase loading and selectivity. In the case
of the internal reflux process, the column is non-isothermal and
optimal operating pressures are expected not to correspond, given
the other parameters, to optimal pressure values for the external
reflux process. In order to understand the effect of pressure on the
separation in the internal reflux process, another series of process
simulations was carried out on columns with 5 theoretical stages,
for given values of T and S/F. In these simulations, P and T1 were
varied in order to determine the locus T1(P) giving stated values
of Xhr (process specification). The resulting values of recovery for
each couple (T1, P) were thus found and the trend of the recovery
as a function of pressure is also determined. Each simulation point
corresponds to optimal feed location.
