Like Dvaravati in Thailand, the Pyu or Tircul culture of the
central Irrawaddy Valley is seen to mark the start of Indianized, urban civilization; and this is known best from brick
temple remains, cemetery material, a few un-translated inscriptions and some statuary. As with Dvaravati a reliable
internal chronology is mostly lacking and this despite the fact
that there is now the beginning of a reasonable chronology
for Bronze and Iron Age sites between c. 700 BCE – 100 CE
(Pautreau 2007).
