Top-Down strategy of the two skills focuses on the meaning of the text that the learners read or listen. It gives attention for the gist of the written material or listening text rather than for each and individual components (www.sabes.org). The learners are expected to give the meaning of the text they read or listen based on their background knowledge. In contrast, Bottom-Down gives emphasis for the smallest block of the language. In other word, it goes from “parts to whole” (www.sil.org). The question is, how do these two strategies help L2 speakers to acquire the language?
