Fi Wi technique is one of the best choice to transport the wireless signals along optical fiber to the remote APs or base stations (BSs) [1], [4]. This system allows integration of the optical and wireless broadband infrastructures with minimal time delay [1], [5]. In this integrated network, complexity of the AP structure is reduced by moving the routing, bandwidth allocation, and processing functionalities to the CO. Figure 1 shows a general architecture of Fi Wi system. The Fi Wi system is composed of two bidirectional segments: (1) optical fiber link which connects the CO with the AP, and (2) wireless link which connects the AP with the WEU. There are two main schemes to transport the wireless signals in the Fi Wi systems: BBOF, and ROF transmission schemes [1], [6]. This paper will report the architectures, advantages, disadvantages, and main parameters of these techniques. In addition, the hybrid Fi Wi system is presented, which has many advantages to be used in the NG broadband access technology. The concept and architecture of the Fi Wi technology will review and discuss.
