The very description of transformational leadership
behavior indicates that the effectiveness of leadership
relates strongly to the ability of leaders to articulate a
clear and compelling vision of the organization and to
increase mission valence among followers (Bass, 1996;
Wright et al., 2012). Transformational leaders can
encourage their followers to embrace the new mission
statement and motivate them to pursue the new mission’s
goals. Furthermore, they can stimulate their followers
intellectually by challenging established
assumptions and build their confidence in the mission.
Finally, transformational leaders can serve as a role
model (Paarlberg & Lavigna, 2010). When the changes
in the mission statement are fundamental, the ability of
transformational leaders to increase the commitment of
subordinates to the mission statement is likely to be
especially important.
