Soil structure in paddy field changes after puddling and during
the rice growth period due to irrigation and drainage. Puddling is a
most common method of land preparation for transplanting of rice
seedlings and for controlling weeds and reducing leaching of water
and nutrients (De Datta and Craswell, 1982; Sharma and De Datta,
1985). Puddling is associated with the soil disturbance through
tillage operations, at or near water saturation. The puddling tillage
usually comprise soneor two ploughing and two ormore harrowings
and a final leveling.
