The Stroke Association highlighted
the different attitudes of both men
and women towards the consequences
of stroke (Stroke Association, 2014b).
Women feared being reliant on others
as a result of stroke and worried about
loss of speech, whereas men were
more concerned with memory loss.
Although there are a number of risk
factors for stroke, including hypertension,
diabetes, smoking, atrial fibrillation,
for women, there are specific risk
factors which include use of hormone
replacement therapy, contraceptives
containing hormones, pregnancy and
history of migraine with aura (Stroke
Association, 2012).
