The Origins of Northern Thai Tea Plantations
The exploration and plantation of tea in Thailand began for the first time in 1941 by a pioneering man, Mr. Prasit Poomchusri ,
an outstanding Chiang Mai farmer and the founder of Raming Tea Co., Ltd. Prasit was inspired to plant northern tea after he read the journal ‘All about Tea’ in the Tea and Coffee Trade Journal which mentioned Lanna as one of the world’s original tea resources.
-----------------------------------
Not many people know that there is excellent tea grown in Thailand, especially Oolong tea. The Doi Mae Salong mountain in Chiang Rai province is one of Thailand’s highest – with 1800 meters.
---------------------------------------
This area is known as the Golden Triangle, with a history of opium trade. The expertise of native people tea growing wisdom become part of the Thai Royal Family's movement to replace opium with tea growth so as to provide a more safe and stable income for the tribal people and overseas Chinese living in this area.
The plantation was visited by the Royal Family and the tribal people was commended for their efforts . The pure air and clean environment make it an ideal place to grow local and Taiwanese varietals, especially high mountian wulong and green teas.
--------------------------------------
What makes Doi Mae Salong more special is the climate: temperatures drop deep at night and raise high during the day time –These make the tea plants to grow more slowly. And when tea plants grow more slowly, that has a positive effect on their aroma: it has more flavorful and sweet.
Plus, there is a lot of fog and many clouds surrounding the mountains, which causes the tea leaves to absorb more moisture. The air is crisp, cool and refreshing all year round, and the annual temperature is around 25 degrees Celsius.
------------------------
A lot of tea is grown and harvested in around 1300 meters high. There are 28,125 hectares of tea plantations in Mae Salong. The most popular tea is Taiwanese-style Oolong, grown by Chinese descendants.
Many of the tea bushes that grow here actually are imported from Taiwan, because the climatic conditions are very similar.
---------------------------
Doi Mae Salong provides just perfect conditions for tea growing. Altitude and climate, conditions similar to those of the Taiwanese cultivation areas are optimal for the cultivation of finest Green and Oolong teas. The region also produces tea scented with jasmine flowers, the Chinese “immortality herb” Jiaogulan, as well as Ginseng Tea and other scented teas like Rice Tea or Osmanthus Green Tea.
