People dressed in anime or scary costumes took to the streets of Tokyo's busy Shibuya district ahead of Halloween on Monday.
Thousands of revelers turned out in and around Shibuya's main intersection on Sunday afternoon, and the congestion continued until the early morning hours.
Tokyo police mobilized more officers this year to deal with the crowds.
At the scramble crossing, members of a unit known as the "DJ police" were deployed. Police will mobilize hundreds of officers again on Monday.
Halloween has become increasingly popular among Japanese youth.
The Japan Anniversary Association estimates that spending related to Halloween this year will reach 1.3 billion dollars.
That's up 10 percent from last year, and second only to Christmas and about equivalent to Valentine's Day.
They say the Halloween market is booming because many businesses see opportunities for the occasion and are increasing products and services.
