The greatest amount of time saved has been realized in the processing of Technical Service Bulletins (TSB). TSBs have been printed and distributed to every dealership using the same method since Toyota began doing business in the United States in 1957. An enormous amount of labor and expense goes into each bulletin, from the document set up to the final printing. As desktop publishing software became
commonplace, the natural progression was for electronic distribution of TSBs. Unfortunately, no process improvement suggestion had ever been made. Now, with the elimination of TSB printing, several other processes, such as manual print distribution and line art preparation, can also be eliminated. This is an example of efficiency enhancements attained through the elimination of waste (Lu, 1986).
