The First Generation On-loan Octopus refers to those Octopus with card numbers that have no bracket for the last digit as shown on the cards. They have been in use since the early days of inception of the Octopus payment system. They were designed and manufactured before the establishment of the Near Field Communication (NFC) standard and thus cannot be used with the "Octopus" App for transaction enquiry or online payment. The replacement of the First Generation On-loan Octopus is to ensure that our customers can continue to enjoy fast and reliable payment service in all of our outlets, including the newly launched online merchants.
The card replacement programme is an on-going initiative aiming to update the First Generation On-loan Octopus in circulation with technological advances, enabling all customers to enjoy the latest Octopus services with continuous validity of a new card.
