carving or sculpting is a stereotomic method for forming an object. carving a solid is the removal of material from it ; this might be done to craft hollows within the solid. this method of carving can be representational of a spatial configuration or a strategy for making space that is defined by mass. it is representational or strategic in that any space constructed at a scale that would permit habitation would necessarily be an assembly of smaller parts.
carving away material can also be away of conditioning the solid to receive another object. it is one step in making a joint with another component in a larger assembly. carving can also be a way re-configuring the form of the solid. carving or sculpting can manipulate the physical attributes of an object in space. this is a transformational process through which the object is modified in order to give it a different purpose.
