Hi everybody,
only a few months ago I bought a new Acer Aspire E5-573-3009 Notebook i3-5005. It comes with the 500GB SSHD (=hybrid drive) Toshiba MQ02ABF050H. I installed 8GB RAM on the notebook, everything works perfectly. However, I use CrystalDiscInfo to permanently keep me updated on the Disk's temperature and S.M.A.R.T. data, and about once in a month I run a test with HDDScan. Now I am really concerned about the Load/Unload Cycle Count, or to be more precise: about the Load Cycles per Hour. For example, today I see that the Load/Unload Cycle Count for the aforementioned disk is already 68007; the number of Power-On Hours is 1346. This means that the average number of Load Cycles per Hour is 50.5. I read quite a lot about the subject of Load/Unload Cycles on the internet, and it seems that 50 Load Cycles per Hour is a much too high value! I have not find any info by Toshiba about the estimated maximum number of Load Cycles their hard drives are supposed to survive, but for many Western Digital drives, it is 300 000. (And my Toshiba SSHD is my Windows system drive, so it can be expected to suffer more wear than the average HD, many of which are used for date storage). If the maximum number of load cycles that my SSHD is expected to survive were similar to that value, it would imply that almost 1/4 of its overall lifetime were already gone - after just a few months (with 1346 Power-On Hours)! I already stopped using Windows Hibernation a week ago (now using Sleep or Shutdown instead, but it did not decrease the value of Load Cycles per Hour very much. I contacted Acer (who are responsible for support in this case, since they sold me the SSHD as part of their notebook), and they told me that they cannot help me at all, because Toshiba has not given them any updated firmware or information regarding this kind of problem. I am now planning to change the disk's Advanced Power Management values in CrystalDiskInfo. It offers a slider ranging from "Min Power" to "Performance"; originally the slider was in the middle, I think I have to move it closer to "Performance", but I have no idea how much, and will it help me with my problem at all. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance for any help!
