Lemons
When I was three years old, I discovered that lemons do not taste good by themselves. One hot summer, my mother decided to start making homemade lemonade. I had never seen lemons before, but they looked like juicy yellow oranges, and I loved oranges, so one time, when my mother was not looking, I grabbed half a lemon off the kitchen counter and put it in my mouth. Pretty soon my mouth felt like it was on fire. I spat out the lemon and screamed. When my mother saw what had happened, she laughed and told me to drink a glass of water. It took three glasses of water to stop me from screaming. When I had calmed down, my mom explained that although lemons and oranges are almost the same kind of fruit, oranges are sweet and sour while lemons are only sour—very sour. That was why she always put sugar in the lemonade. (156)
