Normative commitment refers to an employee’s feeling of obligation to remain with the organization. Thus, employees with strong normative commitment will remain with an organization by virtue of their belief that is the “right and moral” thing to do (Meyer & Allen. 1991; Scholl, 1981; Wiener, 1982) our discussion of normative commitment begins with an outline of earlier (Meyer & Allen ; Winner) and more recent (Rousseau, 1995) theorizing of relevance to the development of normative commitment. This is followed by a description of the empirical evidence and a discussion of implications for future research.
