A harm reduction approach integrates well with motivational interviewing, which asserts that behavior is not constant and that with all maladaptive behavior there is some level of ambivalence (Denning, 1998). This ambivalence can be used as a tool to reduce resistance and motivate individuals to change risk behavior (AIDS Alert, 1999; Denning, 1998; Suarez and Kauth, in press).
