At Zen Center in California, Guests Invited
Tassajara, established by the San Francisco Zen Center and one of the largest Buddhist orders outside of Asia, opens its doors to visitors from April 30 to Sept. 13, with a full roster of weekend and weeklong workshops. The California center is also known for its natural hot springs, vegetarian cuisine and artisan bread baking book, “The Tassajara Bread Book,” by Edward Espe Brown.
A private monastery for most of the year, each spring and summer Tassajara transforms into a destination for Zen and meditation seekers, yoga practitioners and people simply looking to unplug. Set in a mountain valley in the Ventana Wilderness, the center is a two-hour drive east of Carmel, accessible via a 14-mile winding, mountainous dirt road, which can make the journey as memorable as the destination. Retreats are held in an environmentally designed building run on solar power, with geothermal heating.
The Tassajara guest program offers disciplinary retreats taught by leaders in the areas of body and mind, engaging earth, spiritual practice, mindful living and creative expression. Retreat leaders for the 2015 season include the singer-songwriter and actor Jimmie Dale Gilmore, the poet and essayist Jane Hirshfield, the “Unstuff Your Life” author Andrew Mellen, and the Prajna yoga instructor Djuna Mascall.
The all-inclusive price for retreats ranges from $430 to $2,700 for two days up to one week (most run three to four days).
