Histologically, the most striking feature of both, the subuctaneous form due to Basidiobolus and the nasofocial type due to Conidiobolus coronatus, is the presence of a chronic granulomatous inflammatory response, associated with a heavy infiltration by eosinophils. The fungus appears as large non-septate broad hyphae within the cytoplasm of multinucleated giant cells or extracellularly, and are coated by a dense hyaline eosinophilic and granular sub stance, a phenomenon known as the SplendoreHoeppli reaction
