Our study found sensory abnormalities that were detected with WEST monofilaments and could not be attributed to age-related changes. The pattern and extent of sensory changes differed from two recent studies that investigated hand function in these syndromes. However, our sample differed in a clinically important way to these other investigations in that it included high proportions of patients with a history or current symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome and/or trigger finger, as the selection included more symptomatic patients.
