The calculation of
synthetic indicators of soil quality provided a robust and integrative assessment land management impacts and indentified key
parameters of soil variability for reducing future investment in soil
quality evaluation. Of these parameters, soil macrofauna appeared
to provide a sensitive and early indicator or land use impacts on
soil quality. Drawing upon these synthetic indicators, we indentified bioindicator species that were validated by farmers to offer a
simple and powerful tool for local land managers to quickly assess
and react to land management impacts in the region. While our
