Twenty-first century game consoles which connect to the Internet such as Microsoft’s Xbox 360, Sony’s Playstation3, and Nintendo’s Wii all serve as convergence platforms in the entertainment video marketplace. They are essentially computers with more dedicated usefulness in entertainment mediums. Their key purpose is to play videogames, a substitute for many video watchers, but because of their functionality and ease of bundling with television sets, game consoles have evolved to take media straight off the Internet and play it in full resolution on one’s television, leading to further bundling of online rentals and other media content streamed directly to the television. Game consoles can also play music. Despite bundling with what may be traditionally classified as a substitute, game consoles are actually increasing the total usage of each form of entertainment because of decreased costs for separate units, and most importantly, accessibility and ease-of-use. The online rental marketplace is undergoing a large transition due to the technology convergence demonstrated in these consoles, as well as with set-top boxes.
