For packages of organic food products results show that board materials are most commonly used, while the second typical materials are plastic. This suggests that organic product packages are characterised to some extent by the use of plastic materials, the effects from which on the environment are of great concern to modern society. This might be seen as a contradiction between the natural claim of the product and the material used for its package. An explanation for this could be the function of the package to preserve and protect the product, thus some products need a more durable package. Regarding the other functional characteristic, package type, flexible packages are most often used, followed by cartons. These results are explained to a great extend by the fact that for flexible packages usually plastic materials are used, and for cartons usually board materials.
