The elephant is the largest living land animal. The African elephant may reach up to 3.5 meters tall and weigh as much as 5,000 kilograms. The Asian one is smaller but gentler and more easily trained to work. The elephants most useful limb is its trunk, which is very strong and can lift a log. It breathes through the trunk and uses it to suck up water when it wants a shower. The trunk is also used to bring food to the mouth. The bulls have huge tusks which can grow up to 3 meters long. They use the tusks for digging up roots to eat. The cows have tusks too, but they are much smaller.
