Traffic accidents are an increasing public health problem globally and especially in Asia.
This descriptive study aimed to analyze the incidence rate of injury from traffic accidents,
the distribution of traffic accidents in Mueang district, Lamphun province during 2003 to 2007,
and factors related to traffic accidents during 2005 to 2007. The traffic accident information
was retrieved from secondary data from Traffic Injury Record Form and Lawsuit Case Record of
Policemen. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and incidence rate of the traffic
accidents was calculated by the number of new cases who were afflicted with injuries and death in
a total population at risk in each year in Mueang district, Lamphun province.
The results showed that the traffic injury incidence rates were 1,051.9 1,066.7 929.6
820.0 and 911.4 per population of 100,000. Distribution of traffic accidents found that men
experienced traffic incidents more than women. The incidences peaked during November to
December, and the critical time of traffic incidence was between 6.01pm and 9.00 pm. The
majority of the accidents were found on the Lampang to Chiang Mai Road (Highway 111), the
Sanpafai to Sankamphang Road (Highway 1147) and the Jaroenrad Road (metropolitan area).
ช

women were found to be car and road users; most persons who had injuries were between the
working ages of 25 – 59 years; the factor that affected traffic injuries the most were traffic
regulation offences, drunk driving, and driver’s body weakness. 2) The most vehicle that
leaded to accidents was motorcycle. Moreover, causes of accidents included high speed driving
and traffic light dysfunction. 3) The environment factor was lack of street lights. Most of
accidents were occurred on the Lampang to Chiang Mai Road (Highway 111).
The results suggest that campaigns on road traffic accident prevention and driving
behavior should be conducted, focusing on males of working ages 25 – 59 years, during 6.01 pm
and 9.00pm and especially during special holidays. Moreover, traffic regulations should be strictly
endorsed. The relevant organizations should check traffic lights and street lights to ensure that
they work properly.
