Figure 12 shows dynamic energy overheads of the x8 and x4 CWVs compared to that of the memory hierarchy (caches and DRAMs). In the write-back cache case, dynamic energy overheads of the x8 and x4 CWVs are average 0.45% and 0.7%, respectively. In the write-through cache case, those overheads are 0.57% and 0.33% on average for the x8 and x4 CWVs, respectively. In the half of benchmarks (h264ref, astar, libquantum, mst, perimeter, gups, and linkedlist), most write accesses show sub-word granularity. The extra read energy for CWV generation is hidden by RMW for ECC generation in those benchmarks. In contrast, most energy overhead is incurred by extra reads in the other benchmarks (zeusmp, cactusADM, leslie3d, soplex, and stream). This is more apparent with the writethrough cache case since read energy consumption of L2 cache is larger than that of L1 data cache. In summary, energy overheads of our SDS with CWV are small while wecan save large amount of DRAM energy consumption
