Like many other communities, the Peranakans formed their own associations to advance the welfare of their community. In 1900, several key Straits-born leaders of the Chinese community, namely Tan Jiak Kim, Seah Liang Seah, Lim Boon Keng (Dr) and Song Ong Siang, came together to form the Straits Chinese British Association (SCBA). Besides looking after the interests of the Peranakan community, the SCBA initially also had a political agenda: to promote interest in the British Empire and loyalty to the Queen. The SCBA is today known as the Peranakan Association.
