Colleagues
You may now be aware that sadly an employee of one of the contractors at the Bakubung Platinum mine site in South Africa was fatally injured. He was struck by a falling object while working in the mine shaft. The incident is currently being investigated and once completed we will share with you the learnings. While we have made significant progress in South Africa with regard to mine safety, this incident reinforces that we still have a lot to do to reach our goal of Zero Harm.
The Group Leadership Team met recently to review the organization change. We heard feedback from across the organization that we needed to provide greater clarity around a number of key issues.
We discussed and resolved a way forward for all of these issues and Group Leadership Team members and I will be discussing the outcomes across the business over the next few weeks. However, I would like to touch on a couple of the issues here being the inconsistent understanding of the base intent of the change and how this base intent has driven the design of our structure; and the importance of BD and how it will work under our structure.
The base intent of the new structure was, and still is, to:
• perform Major Projects better - The Major Projects business line responsible for winning and leading the execution of nominated large or complex projects wherever they are in the world supported by dedicated major project execution centers;
• set up the Improve business for growth - The Improve business line is responsible for the leadership and execution of nominated long term operational and asset management relationships, as well as winning new relationships;
• allow the Services business to focus on its local customers - The Services locations will continue to provide our high quality service offering including consulting, delivery and Improve, with local offices focused on winning and delivering services to local customers and the local operations of our regional and global customers;
• reduce overheads and increase competitiveness - Build more streamlined and focused functional support within the business lines with Group level assurance resulting in reduced overhead costs and increased competitiveness.
Fundamentally the design intent is to improve our responsiveness and flexibility to meet our customers’ needs through the use of our strong capability and vibrant global networks. The initial response from our customers has been positive. Our customers vary from emerging companies to complex global entities and our ability to position ourselves in a manner that resonates with each of them is a critical part of our success.
While each business line is responsible for the business development activities to support their business, to ensure we are optimizing our positioning and service offering to the customers, I have asked Gordon Cowe, as leader of Major Projects Business Development, to coordinate the business development team across all business lines and customers.
The Global Business Development Leadership team will set the expectations associated with customer engagement, marketing, platinum pursuit and proposals efforts across the organization. Gordon and the team will ensure our Sector strategic planning is reinforced through the work we win and engage with our diverse Major Projects, Services and Improve teams to ensure consistency in our global, regional and local customer relationship management activities. Expect further communication from Gordon as this team forms and begins to drive the new approach. We aim to build a strong customer focused business development culture throughout the group that attracts the best talent within our own organization and within the industry.
Last week, immediately following the Group Leadership Team meeting, we held our Annual General Meeting and Investor Day events in Sydney. The updates provided to our shareholders and the market are available to you via the links above.
Once again, I thank you for your patience as we resolve the remaining issues with the reorganization and ask you to keep focused on working safely and delivering what we promise for our customers.
