The overall research findings include the information requirements
of various engineering disciplines if they had the opportunity to
interact with an integrated information repository of embankment
dams in terms of what information such a repository should
contain for risk assessments. The identified requirements have been
grouped into several categories (as shown in Table 3) and described
below—the numbers beside each category indicates the number of
information items identified in relation to that category:
1. General information (9): This category includes information
about general characteristics of a dam such as the type of the
dam, the construction period, and its location (Table 3).
2. Visual inspection information (14): This category includes any
information obtained when the dam site is toured physically
and visually inspected (e.g., wet spot number).
3. Construction historic documents (23): This category includes
the detailed documentation captured and generated during the
construction phase that would be helpful for engineers to identify
possible construction deficiencies.
4. Geometric, spatial, and topological information (108): This
category includes five subcategories with respect to the
composition of an embankment dam and the corresponding
information items that describe the geometric, spatial, and topological
representation of the related embankment dam parts.
The subcategories include dam body, spillway, reservoir, preexisting
structures, and conduits/outlets.
5. Hydraulic and hydrologic information (73): This category
includes four subcategories as design flows (the capacities
of the hydraulic components), storage capacities of four
pools, reservoir, and tail water levels as can be seen from
Table 3.
6. Geologic information (32): This category explains the geologic
properties of the site where the dam is constructed. These
are important to know for foundation assessment.
7. Field testing information (60): This category includes information
about conducted field tests, test parameters, and their
results.
8. Failure consequence information (15): This category includes
the consequence information in case of the failure of a
dam given a failure mode and reports using during dam risk
assessment.
