COGNITIVE EMOTIONS
Apart from basic emotions, there are higher cognitive emotions, sometimes called secondary or social emotions (Damasio, 1999) that are also universal in nature, but which exhibit some cultural variation. These emotions take longer to build up and longer to die away, than basic emotions (Evans, 2001). See box for a list of some of the higher cognitive secondary emotions.
