The Washington Metro, D.C.'s public transportation system, released a proposed budget for its next fiscal year earlier this week. According to the Washington Post, the new budget is "likely to please riders" and seems aimed at winning previous riders back to the system. Multiple breakdowns, reliability issues and safety problems over the years have started to alienate the system from the public it seeks to serve. The problem has been exacerbated by fare increases which have not seemed to lead to any improvements in service or safety.
