Project MW was initiated in 1984 with the objective of installing I MW of PV systems in 3-kW roof-mounted grid-connected residential units. The first proof-of-concept system was installed in 1987 and by 1988 it grew to 10 units, all part of Phase 0 of the project. Phase 1 was initiated in 1989 and over one hundred 3-kW systems had been installed by the end of 1990. Each of the 3-kW units has 25 m2 of roof-mounted PV modules, a single-phase 3-kW PCU, and are connected directly to the electric distribution system in the residence. A single meter is used and the customer buys and sells excess energy at the same price [31].
