As engineering is one of the most popular university courses with Hong Kong students, this week we'll be looking at how to write personal statements and admissions essays aimed specifically at this course.
Engineering is an incredibly diverse subject and some universities don't require specialization until at least after the first year.
You need to demonstrate some idea of what the subject is about, but don't just choose civil engineering by default.
Some universities require you to choose your exact program at the beginning, for example, mechanical or aerospace engineering, but if not, examine the course, see which modules appeal to you, and base your application around that.
What made you want to be an engineer? Ponder the question and try to be original.
You will not be the only student citing Burj Khalifa in Dubai or the Petronas Twin Towers as an influence. Look around Hong Kong and pick something that has personal significance to you.
For example, did you grow up crossing the Tsing Ma Bridge? It's the largest suspension bridge in the world that features both road and rail traffic. Could you form a statement around that?
How about the current HSBC building, which was for a time the most expensive skyscraper in the world and now makes innovative use of LED lighting?
It is not difficult to find a pioneering structure in Hong Kong and therefore an original idea for an essay.
Work experience is a good idea and relatively easy to get in Hong Kong. Consider joining a private surveying firm or related business.
It might not seem useful when you are busy photographing water damage or writing reports about weak points in concrete, but you are actually studying the basics of structural safety, and this will be a vital part of your future career.
Engineering obviously has a heavy maths and physics basis. Aside from checking out if there are any prerequisites in either subject before beginning your course, try to think of a way to demonstrate your scientific and analytical mind.
Have you been in any situations where you have been required to problem solve as part of a group? This is particularly important as engineering is evidently a team-based profession.
Have you taken any design and construction workshops you could talk about? Have you won any competitions or prizes that emphasize your skills in maths and science?
Consider other ways you can demonstrate your interest in the subject - for example, reading general books related to engineering, or attending free public lectures at universities across Hong Kong. The internet is replete with relevant documentaries you could mention, and you might consider subscribing to industry publications, for example Engineering magazine and its related specific titles like Mechanical Engineering.
Wherever you get your ideas, make sure the passion you convey in your writing for the subject is genuine.
