People have known since the time of the Ancient Egyptian and Greeks that some substances taste sour and some feel slippery. Vinegar is probably the best example of a sour-tasting liquid that early peoples would have known about. Early examples of slippery substances includes potash found in the ashes of burnt wood, soda made from the evaporation of some solutions, and lime made from the burning of seashells.
