Our study differs from the other studies in
several ways. First, our study population con-sisted predominantly of freshmen college stu-dents who currently live on campus, probably
away from home for the first time. Second,
our survey collected several demographic
variables that could help identify subpopu-lations at greater risk of foodborne illnesses;
studies have shown that demographic vari-ables strongly influence food safety attitudes
(Kennedy, Worosz, Todd, & Lapinski, 2008).
Third, our study also included the students’
feelings about their risks of foodborne dis-ease, which are important in the risk percep-tion construct (Gordon, 2003)
