3.1. Tearing of ship plates by wedge
Most grounding damage calculations are based on wedge-cutting experiments [12–
15]. Wierzbiki and Thomas [16] developed a closed form solution for the wedgecutting
force calculation, which was followed by Ohtsubo and Wang [17] who
proposed a formula in which the tip of the crack coincides with the wedge tip. Many

unstiffened plates under static cutting by a wedge and detailed information can be
