On admission her pertinent lab findings were a low level
of vitamin D (22 ng/ml). Her fracture was treated with an
intramedullary implant locked in dynamic mode. Bone
fragments near the fracture site were removed and sent
for undecalcified processing. Tissue was fixed in 70% alcohol,
processed through graded alcohol/acetone solutions,
embedded in methylmethacrylate, sectioned at 5 μm on a
Leica SM 2500 sliding microtome (Leica Corporation,
Bonnackburn, IL), and stained with hematoxylin and eosin
and von Kossa.
