Lesson COG 5
Task: Visually follow object from side to side.
Prerequisites: ADT 1, COG 4
Concept: The concept of this exercise is very tinnier to the previous task of "visually follow en object from side to front" (prerequisite COG 4). If the student is having difficulty visually tracking an object past the midpoint (when directly in front of the face), it is possible that this phenomenon is biologically based and cannot be reason-ably taught. Teachers should not frustrate the student or themselves but pursuing this activity, once it is clearly established that success is not likely. Some tracking, however, can be very, helpful to the student.
Behavioral Objective: When the student is presented with an object at an approximate 90-degree angle, the student will turn his or her head toward the object and follow it with the eyes to the opposite side of the head, to approximately a 90-degree angle, to a 90% accuracy level for 20 trials.
Materials: Toy(s) or item(s) demonstrated to be of interest to the student.
Task Analysis:
1. Capitalize on the skills learned in COG 4 by repeating that process. Then physically assist the student in turning his or her head past the midpoint (directly in front) and continue tracking the object to the other side. Use a lot of verbal interaction during this activity.
2. Continue Step 1, gradually reducing the physical guidance provided until only verbal prompting, encouragement, and praise are needed.
3. Continue Step 2, reducing all prompting until the student performs the task without verbal cues.
