Are your Soaps and Skin care Products Allergy Free?
We test all of our products on ourselves, family members, and friends who are happy to volunteer. Although our products are made with all natural ingredients, many people are allergic to natural ingredients such as certain plants, nuts, and oils. An ingredient that is very mild and soothing for one person can be an allergen for another! There is no soap or cosmetic product in this world that is truly "allergy-free."
Each product description on our website includes a complete list of ingredients.
• Please read through all ingredients listed.
• People who have food allergies are not always allergic to the same items in skin care products.
• In case you are in doubt do an "allergy patch test."
• Check out our "Common Allergies" page
When using new herbal products or products with new essential oils, you should perform a patch test for reactions before use.
Allergy Patch Test
Procedure:
• Apply a small amount of item you are testing* on the upper part of your inner arm (at the crook of the elbow).
• Cover it with a bandage.
• Choose a time of day where you can leave the patch test in place for least 24 hours without getting it wet.
• If you are sensitive to any of the ingredients, a reaction such as reddening, burning, itching, or other irritation, should occur within twenty-four hours of application.
• If you don't see or feel any reaction, the preparation is probably safe to use. (See note under Allergic contact dermatitis.)
*If you are testing herbs, mix a small amount of herbs with water to make a paste. Apply the herbal paste for the patch test.
What is patch testing?
Patch testing is a way of identifying a substance that causes contact dermatitis (inflammation of the skin). There are two types of contact dermatitis: irritant contact dermatitis and allergic contact dermatitis.
• Irritant contact dermatitis: An irritant reaction does not involve the immune system. It is most pronounced immediately after the patch is removed and fades over the next day. Although a substance that causes an irritant reaction may exacerbate skin conditions such as eczema, the reaction will not get worse with repeated exposure to the irritant.
• Allergic contact dermatitis: An allergic reaction is due to substance called an allergen and occurs only in those who are allergic to that particular substance. These reactions involve the immune system. Since an allergic reaction may take a few days to develop, if you are an allergic type person it is important to keep an eye on the patch area for a few days after the patch is removed before using the product. A substance that causes an allergic reaction should be avoided completely. The more times the skin is exposed to the substance, the worse the allergic reaction can become.
Some of our soaps have no scent added—you’ll love the earthy smell of natural soap. Many have distinct natural aromas due to honey, grains, flowers, spices, or herbs.
Scented soaps have all natural plant essential oils added, not synthetic fragrances. Again "all-natural" does not mean "allergy-free." Natural plant essential oils may still cause skin irritation or reactions in certain individuals.
If you notice any adverse affects, please discontinue use.
People with severe allergies--please note: If you have severe anaphylactic type reactions to ANY of the ingredients we use please do not buy our products. Our soap shop is kept meticulously clean and all soaps/shampoos are cured in separate containers. But we cannot guarantee that one soap did not touch another.
o Why does natural soap "sweat" in humid weather?
Why does Natural Soap "Sweat" in Humid Weather?
A quality bar of handmade soap will often "sweat" in humid weather due to the high content of natural humectants. A humectant is a substance that readily absorbs moisture from its surroundings.
Glycerin is a humectant that is a natural byproduct of saponification, the chemical reaction that produces soap. In commercial soaps, the glycerin is removed and used to produce commercial lotions. Handmade soaps, rich in natural glycerin, are the most moisturizing soaps you can find! When you wash with natural soap there is a thin layer of natural glycerin left behind, which will draw moisture to your skin. The general health of the skin relates directly to its moisture content. All natural handmade soaps can help the skin maintain a moisture balance while nourishing the skin.
When natural soap sits out in humid conditions, the glycerin in the soap will draw the moisture out of the air and onto the soap. So the sweating is actually moisture from the air that the glycerin attracts, not moisture coming from inside the soap. The more humid the environment and the more humectants in the soap, the more likely you'll experience this phenomenon.
Honey, for example, is also a natural humectant, attracting and retaining moisture in the skin. Castor bean oil also moisturizes by acting as a humectant. So soaps and shampoos containing added honey, and shampoo bars with loads of castor oil, may sweat even more. There is nothing wrong with your soap, it's just the glycerin and other natural humectants doing their job.
Please understand that when you receive your soaps during humid weather conditions, some of the soaps and wrappers may be damp or wrinkled from the natural "sweat" of the soaps.
There is nothing wrong with your soap and it is not melting, it's just the glycerin and other natural humectants doing their job.
o Do Chagrin Valley soaps have a definite shelf life?
Do Soap and Shampoo Bars have a definite Shelf Life?
The answer is Yes and No
Just like fine wine, Chagrin Valley Handcrafted Soaps get better with age. Left to cure for several months, moisture will evaporate out of your bar of handmade soap and the soap will become slightly smaller, harder, longer lasting, and more mild. The harder (older) the soap, the longer it lasts and the better lather it produces. We allow our soaps and shampoos to cure for 6 to 8 weeks. This resting process assures a fine quality product. You simply cannot rush a good thing.
The method we chose to superfat our soaps creates a bar with a high percentage of unincorporated oils. (We superfat our soaps more than our shampoo bars.) This results in a more emollient, more moisturizing, and gentler soap.
Different oils impart different qualities to soap. Some add lathering qualities, some moisturizing, some hardness, and so on. We use a larger percentage of extra moisturizing and conditioning oils in our soaps and shampoo bars than many other soapmakers. As a result, you may notice our bar soaps tend to be softer than those of other soapmakers, especially our shampoo bars which contain a large percentage of castor oil.
Natural soaps need to breathe. Exposure to air promotes hardening of your soap and contributes to longer-lasting quality. Soap should be left unwrapped or wrapped with breathable materials. Tight wrappers cause humid conditions by preventing evaporation of moisture.
Chagrin Valley Handcrafted Soaps contain all natural fresh ingredients and no artificial preservatives. We superfat our soaps by adding extra oils and butters, like jojoba oil, avocado oil, or shea butter. These oils are not consumed in the soap making process and remain to nourish your skin. These unreacted oils add beneficial properties to the soap, but they can spoil over long periods of time. We do not use synthetic stabilizers or preservatives like BHT or Trisodium EDTA to prolong shelf life. These materials can be skin irritants and are usually found in commercial soaps to extend their shelf life for years. We use natural antioxidants, such as rosemary oil extract, to help prolong the shelf life of our superfatted soaps.
