As for English, pitches do not play important role in word meaning. Nevertheless, in connected speech, only some syllables are accented, and other syllables receive weak forms. The pitch of the same syllable may change when the sentence is said with different personal attitudes: surprise, certainty, anger, etc. Languages that are not tone languages, such as English are called intonation language. The pitch contour of the utterance varies but it is used to distinguish words from one another.
