The visible and infra-red absorption spectra of oxyhemoglobin, carbonylhemoglobin,
reduced hemoglobin, methemoglobin, and metcyanhemoglobin
have been determined. Several new bands in the infra-red are
described.
The absorption spectra of oxyhemoglobin and carbonylhemoglobin in
hemolyzed human blood are identical with those obtained from pure calf
hemoglobin in the visible region of the spectrum. In the infra-red the
whole hemolyzed blood has a somewhat higher absorption.
A method of evaluating the absolute purity of purified hemoglobin preparations
is described.
A simple spectrophotometric method for determining the CO and
methemoglobin contents of blood is indicated.
